Rover Oxford Hockey Festival

The Rover Oxford Hockey Festival continued to draw the crowds to Cokethorpe School and Witney ATP over the weekend with over 700 children taking part in 80 teams entered over eight age groups.  All players received a pack of Haribo sweets from the festival sponsors and the England Hockey Roadshow provided goal scoring entertainment for the youngsters in this Olympic Year where over £50 was raised for Helen and Douglas House.  Banbridge Academy had again made the long trip from Northern Ireland to take part whilst Oxford HC families hosted U14 girls from our twin city Leiden for the first time.  Fair Play trophies were awarded by the Oxfordshire umpires for the older age groups.

On Saturday at Witney ATP, the girls U14 competition saw Hawks easing through the final 2-0 against Cheltenham B with Cirencester taking third spot.  Leiden  picked up the Fair Play award having narrowly missed getting into the finals.  In the U12 girls age group, Cheltenham pipped Oxford A to top spot with a 1-0 win with Cirencester again third.  Oxford B picked up the Fair Play award.

Over at Cokethorpe school, the U14 boys saw hosts Oxford lift their first medals with a last minute goal against local rivals Hawks with Aylesbury awarded the Fair Play trophy.  Next up, the U16 girls final saw Marlow edge out Hawks 1-0 with a fine penalty corner routine while Eastcote lifted the Fair Play trophy.  The final games of the day saw the U16 boys in action where a dominant Hawks overcame Oxford 4-0 in the final with Aylesbury taking the Fair play award.

On Sunday, the younger age groups competed for the coveted medals with Wallingford and Hawks sharing first place as their result after extra time remained at 1-1.  The U10 competition saw Cheltenham squeeze past Wallingford A 2-1 whilst in the U12 boys competition Hawks comfortably gained top spot with a 4-0 win over Cheltenham.

Head of Cokethorpe, Damian Ettinger presented the U12 boys medals saying  “Oxford Hockey club continue to delight us with this well organised feast of hockey making the most of the great facilities we have to offer here at the school”
