Deutsche Bank Summer Hockey Sevens Set For Exciting Conclusion

The final games in a tournament involving fifty young Jersey hockey players are due to take place next week.

The ‘Deutsche Bank Summer Hockey Sevens’, launched by the Jersey Hockey Association as part of the ongoing Deutsche Bank Hockey Development Programme in May this year, has given young hockey players between the age of 10 and 15 the opportunity to continue to play hockey throughout the summer and build on the skills they gained through the Development Programme.

Over the past couple of months, the five mixed seven-a-side teams in the league - the Greeks, the Romans, the Persians, the Barbarians and the Gladiators – have all played against each other. The series now culminates in what promises to be an exciting final programme of matches at Les Quennevais on Tuesday 14th July, starting at <st1:time w:st="on" minute="30" hour="18">6.30pm</st1:time>.

At the time of writing, Greeks top the league, with key matches set to be played between themselves and Barbarians, vying for a matter of four points that separate eachother from the top of the table. Following the matches, at around <st1:time w:st="on" minute="30" hour="20">8.30pm</st1:time>, awards will be presented to the winning team and the player of tournament.

A number of novice umpires have also assisted with the league, alongside experienced umpires, as part of the Umpire Development Programme.

Mike Tait, organiser of the Deutsche Bank Summer Hockey Sevens, said:

‘It is so important for Jersey’s young hockey players to have the opportunity to continue to play matches and develop the skills they have learnt through the Deutsche Bank Development Programme. That more than fifty boys and girls have taken part in this league is evidence of the enthusiasm of these youngsters and the importance of the Development Programme. I am most grateful to all the coaches and umpires who have made this possible.’

Victoria College Colts vs Elizabeth College Colts March 2008

Victoria College Colts edged victory over their Elizabeth College counterparts with a winning goal in the last minute of a see saw encounter at the Claremont Field on Saturday.

The game did not start well for Victoria when, after five minutes, a speculative long ball from the Elizabeth midfield hit the Victoria post, bounced back into play and hesitant defending led to a foot infringement on the goal line resulting in a penalty stroke being awarded. Nick Robilliard, the Elizabeth captain then stepped up and converted the penalty to give Elizabeth an early initiative.

The match was a fast flowing even encounter with both teams creating opportunities with Robilliard for Elizabeth and Finlay Hare his Victorian counterpart both vying for midfield supremacy.

Victoria equalised after 22 minutes when a well rehearsed penalty corner routine ended with Robert Cuming scoring.
Just before half time, Victoria took the lead with probably the best goal of the game. Swift passing down the left hand side starting from Robert Corfe at the back, via Luke Gallichan and Robert Cuming brought the ball to Rufus Scholefield in the opposition D to strike home.

The lead did not last long and within minutes of the restart, Tony Paluch had brought his side level. Elizabeth then retook the lead when Jack Curran took advantage of a scramble in the Victoria D to score.

But two minutes later Victoria equalised when Cuming scored again with a strike on goal at a penalty corner. With only five minutes remaining both teams would have been happy with a draw, however in the last minute Cuming released a ball to Alex Bolton who dribbled beyond defenders and passed the ball across the Elizabeth D to the advancing Hugo Barette who slipped the ball to Rufus Scholefield to hit the winner.

ABN AMRO Islands Tournament 2009

ABN AMRO Islands Hockey Tournament Jersey 2009

19th & 20th September

It is with great pleasure that the Jersey Hockey Association (JHA) will host the ABN AMRO Islands Hockey Tournament 2009.

The ABN AMRO tournament will be held across two sites over September 19th and 20th, with 5 Islands challenging their skills and fitness against each other in a Men’s and Ladies event.

The Claremont Field Astroturf pitch, at the back of Victoria College’s playing field, will host the Men’s squads of Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Bermuda for the Saturday ‘Round Robin’. The playing programme for the Ladies squads of Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Bermuda and Orkney will run in parallel at the Les Quennevais Astroturf pitch.

The Sunday will see an action packed ‘Finals Day’ day at Les Quennevais Astroturf pitch where both the Men’s and Ladies play-offs will take place culminating in the presentations of the trophies for the ABN AMRO Islands Hockey Tournament by ABN AMRO at 4.45 pm. [please see below the attachment fixtures for the tournament].

ABN AMRO have provided great support for this prestigious event and this year marks the 35th Anniversary of ABN AMRO in the Channel Islands. Played first in 2005 in Guernsey and then in the Isle of Man in 2007, the tournament is in its infancy. Thanks to the support of ABN AMRO and the good work by the tournament’s Technical Delegate, Neville Benbow, the tournament boasts not one but two International umpires in Andy Mair and Hamish Jamson to officiate the play-offs and finals.

The teams will all be competing for the ABN AMRO Islands Hockey Tournament Trophy 2009 and the JHA are delighted to welcome teams from Orkney, Bermuda, Guernsey and the current holders, Isle of Man to this prestigious event.

Orkney have a thriving hockey Association with 11 teams and 3 leagues. Their local rivalry with the island of Shetland provides “the biggest game” of the season. Three years ago Orkney started entering the Scottish District Cup and during the 2007/8 season they reached the semi finals.

The Bermuda Hockey Federation enjoys similar membership and boasts 16 sides and 3 leagues. They played host to the “Womens International Field Hockey PAN AM Cup” in February this year.

Isle of Man’s strength is known having won the trophy in 2007 on home soil. With 8 Clubs contributing to the Men’s, Ladies’ and mixed leagues to draw from, they will return to defend their title with confidence.

Channel Island hopes should be high. Guernsey currently hold the prestigious Harrod Men’s UK Trophy’, the first time a Channel Island side has won a major UK cup competition. However, although Jersey only made the quarter finals in the same season, they did record an impressive away win over their old rivals in this year’s inter-insular so giving the betting man something to think about.

Old Victorians Vintage - HA Plate competition?

Rathbones Old Victorians Vintage progressed to the last 16 of the National HA Over 50s Masters Plate with a 3-0 win but the scoreline fails to convey the tightness of the game

Played at Claremont Field, UK visitors Trojans HC from Hampshire were the first to threaten with an early penalty corner but it was dealt with well by Mike Tait. OVs first real chance came after 5 minutes. Jerry Bolton and Phil de Figueiredo worked the ball well down the right flank and de Figueiredo's assist was tucked away by Mark Fullerton from close range. Two minutes later and OVs doubled their lead - following a good advantage by the umpire and another de Figueiredo assist, Mick Millar lifted the ball over the diving keeper high into the net. And after 11 minutes Nigel de Carteret showed his goalscoring prowess with OVs third. Barely a quarter into the match and three up against a side that had lost narrowly last time out to premiership outfit Reading - OVs were pinching themselves.

But even with the three goal cushion, by midway in the first half the tide was turning. De Figueiredo sustained an injury that ended his match and, with the OVs squad already reduced pre match by injuries and flu, Ian Cuming nobly took to the field although already carrying an injury. OVs were guilty of surrendering possession too easily and both sides spent much of the first half chasing and harrying rather than creating. Des Legg and the influential Brian Hiscock were beginning to dictate but OVs held until half time with a defence well led by skipper Peter Harris and augmented by the classy Richard de Figueiredo.

More injury woes followed when the industrious Tait pulled a calf and OVs were effectively reduced to nine fully fit players. Unsurprisingly Trojans pushed hard for goals but found OV keeper Mike Labey in inspired form. He made save after save from short corners and in open play. And when Labey was beaten Richard de Figueiredo and David Ballingall both made terrific stick stops on the goal line. Then when they too were beaten Old Victorians found a friend in the woodwork! Trojans hit the post no fewer than three times and the final coup de grace came when centre forward Zahid Arain superbly deflected a cross goalwards only to see it strike the cross bar!. So despite the Trojans pressure Labey and his defence held out. In the closing minutes when the likelihood of victory became inevitable OVs kept possession better than they had done for much of the match to hold on for a hard fought win.

Their next match will be in February where another win would see them to the quarter finals. The draw for their opponents will be this week

Old Victorians Jersey 3 - Trojans 0

Men's Hockey Association Vintage Plate

Rathbones Old Victorians lost out in the last sixteen of the HA Men’s Over 50 Plate competition to a strong Chelmsford side.

Chelmsford showed their attacking intent early when Ken Wooding hit the post in the first minute and OVs were very much on the back foot during the opening passage of play. With a core of strong players down the middle of the team Chelmsford passed the ball well throughout the match and OVs had to work hard to gain and then keep possession. England O50 international Wooding had another sighter when he rifled one past the post after ten minutes but OVs countered well and 13 minutes in Mark Fullerton flew down the right flank and his accurate cross was met by Nigel de Carteret whose shot on the turn hit the upright just below the crossbar. It was a great effort and would have unsettled Chelmsford. But it was the visitors who had the bulk of the goal chances with OVs often having to scramble the ball away with some feisty work in their defensive D. Bruce Evans went close again and then after 21 minutes Wooding broke the deadlock with a fine turn and strike that gave Mike Labey in goal little chance. OVs were restricted to the counter and on one occasion good interplay between Paul Masterton and Geoff Crill released Steve Hervieu whose good break down the left flank released the OV forwards but they could not capitalise. The half ended as it had begun with a flashing shot whistling past the OV upright from Wooding.

Two penalty corners were well dealt with by the OV defence with David Ballingall in particular calm in a crisis. Finally OVs had an opportunity to dictate and with Chelmsford far from at ease with only a goal separating the teams the Jersey team enjoyed their best period in the first third of the second half. Mick Millar, Fullerton and Mike Tait all created good opportunities and OVs deservedly won a string of penalty corners first coming from a Hervieu drive into the D which drew the foul. The best attempt was Masterton’s strike which just missed Mckee’s left post. Perhaps this galvanised Chelmsford because John Meier, Evans and Mike Abel all had good chances – Abel in particular spurning a chance in front of goal which drew groans from his team mates. A penalty corner (perhaps harsh on the OVs) gave a further chance for Evans and Labey was clearly disappointed to see the ball squeeze past him for a second Chelmsford goal. However he then redeemed himself with a string of athletic saves as the match wore on - particularly a brave diving save at the foot of Wooding in a one on one. And although OVs continued to press and try to create opportunities the pattern of the match was now set and the last two pieces of action in the final minute were Labey saves.

Captain Peter Harris after the final whistle praised his team’s effort but realistically conceded that on the day Chelmsford were the stronger side. The harsh reality was that despite the de Carteret shot being denied by the woodwork and a few other efforts the Chelmsford keeper was not called upon to make a save whereas the OV defence and midfield were under a lot of pressure. But all said a good effort against a good team.
