Men's 1s promoted back to the Premier Division!

A gut-wrenching 2-1 win at Old Georgians, and with Old Loughtonians drawing, has secured our place back in the top division of English hockey after a six-season absence.

This great achievement has been made possible by a large number of people, but the congratulations of the club must go to coach John Shaw, captain Chris Hibbert, manager Jim Wallington, as well as, of course, the players. Well done!

Competing in next season's premier Division will be tough, but the club can now look forward as one of the top clubs again - hopefully joined in the EHL by our women's 1s.

The Old Georgians game was intense and closely-fought; we took at lead after 21 minutues, but OGs equalised 15 minutes into the second half. With chances at both ends, the game could have gone either way, but Rick Gay scored the winner with just five minutes left.

Team and supporters eagerly awaited the result of the Brooklands v Old Loughtonians game, which had started 30 minutes later, and then the call came through: they had drawn, handing us the title.

Ladies' 1s promoted to EHL!

The ladies' 1st team have propelled themselves into the national league for the first time, after a stunning performance at the EHL play-offs in Bristol.

This achievement, as the club is marking the 25th year of the ladies' section, comes shortly after the men's return to the EHL Premier Division, and places Southgate in the small group of top clubs with both their men's and women's teams playing in the EHL.

Congratulations go to the players, captain Emma Kingstone, coach James Duthie, and all those who have helped to build this success. With a large contingent of home-grown U18s, this is proof of what has been achieved after ten years' hard work by Liz Moss, Matt McDonnell, and all the others involved in our superb junior section.

Already first-time champions of the South League, the girls had to play a series of five matches over three weekends, with two of the six teams involved ending up in the EHL. With four points in the bag after two games, the ladies' 1st team travelled to Bristol for the Bank Holiday weekend to play the remaining three games.

The first match was a hugely disappointing 3-0 loss to Horsham, whom we had outplayed, but who had put their chances away when we hadn't. The result put us into a difficult position, and the following day's match was pretty much do or die.

As it turned out, the girls put on a superb performance, completely outclassing Springfields UCLAN, and the 6-1 scoreline showing that there were no problems finding the net. With goal difference playing an important part of this small competition, this single result put us into second place behind the leaders Horsham, with one match to go.

In the final match, we still had to beat Matlock, so there was enormous tension as the most important match in the women's section's history started. Mercifully the goals came relatively easily, and by half time it was 2-0, ending at 5-1. The large crowd of Southgate supporters joined in the champagne celebrations and photo-taking.

The team will play next season in one of three EHL regional divisions below the women's Premier Division. To be just one division away from the top flight is an truly momentous achievement, for a side which were playing county hockey just 3 seasons ago.

Chris Hibbert appointed men's 1s coach

We're delighted to announce Chris' appointment. The press release reads:

A father and son coaching team is taking over the reins at Southgate Hockey Club.

First team goalkeeper Chris Hibbert and his father Brian are looking to steer the three-time European Cup-winning club back into the top flight next season.

Both boast a wealth of coaching experience while Chris, a South Africa international on the cusp of retirement, has an intimate knowledge of the club and the first-team set-up having played for the men's 1s for the last four seasons.

He will be head coach and his father assistant coach. They take over from former GB international and club stalwart John Shaw.

They will also head a recruitment drive for new players for the team this summer.Chris, 33, who will combine goalkeeping and coaching duties once the new season gets under way in September, said: "Getting Southgate back up into the Premier Division is going to be a real challenge, but one I’m very happy about taking on."Work is already under way to put together the best squad we can, and we’re improving the structure of the club to work more closely with our second team and the superb juniors that the club produces."

Southgate were relegated from the Premier League in March.

As well as being the team's assistant coach last season and its captain two seasons ago, Chris has coached at Spencer Hockey Club for the last two seasons, Brunel University in 2005-6 and Barnes Hounslow Ealing in 2004-5.

A top player, he won the Division One player of the season twice in row - in 2006-7 and 2007-8 - and represented his native South Africa at the Athens and Beijing Olympics Games.

His father has national coaching experience having been assistant national coach of Wales in 2005-7 and Wales U21 men's team's head coach in 2007-8.

He has coached two UK national league teams - then Premier League men's first team Teddington in 2002-3 and then national league side Oxford Hawks in 2003-4.He was also Barnes Hounslow Ealing ladies' first team coach from 2005-9 - the side finished fourth in the Conference East (formerly national division one) last season, one place behind Southgate's women's first team.

Club chairman David Lloyd-Williams said: "I’m delighted to have Chris and Brian on board.

"Chris is a popular and respected leader in the current squad and brings enormous experience from the highest level of our sport.

"The team of Chris and father Brian is a powerful combination and I’m very confident we’ll be challenging to get back into the Premier Division next season.

"I would like to pay tribute to John Shaw who has made an enormous contribution to the club in his role as men's first team coach."
David Vinson

The club is sad to report that David Vinson died yesterday, June 9th. He had been ill for some time.

David, who was 66, was our men’s first team coach through the highly successful eighties and well into the first decade of the national league.

David will be remembered for producing some of the country’s finest players, including Sean Kerly, Richard Dodds, Steve Batchelor, John Shaw, James Duthie, and many more. He was a major coaching figure in this country as well as internationally, but was especially active in the East of England. He lived in King’s Lynn – a regular 200-mile round trip to Southgate few would contemplate today – and the club benefited from a reliable stream of high quality East players. Some of these have gone onto successful coaching careers of their own, including the current England/GB ladies’ coach, Danny Kerry.

David held various coaching posts at national level at different times, including the England men's coach position (twice), and men's U21s. In 1977, he was the fourth person in the world to be appointed as an FIH Master Coach. He was a Southgate Vice-President, and was awarded our top honour, the Dunlop Award, in 1991.

Southgate Chairman David Lloyd-Williams said “David Vinson’s contribution to Southgate was considerable, as it was to the wider sport. As well as bringing us great success on the field, he cemented the club's reputation for excellence at home and abroad. He was not only a sound tactician, but in terms of personal skills, a quite brilliant innovator. His legacy can be seen today in the high quality of playing and coaching at Southgate and elsewhere”.

Jean Relou appointed as ladies first team coach

The club has appointed Jean Relou as the ladies' 1st team coach.

Jean, 49, who is Dutch, has extensive coaching and playing experience in the Netherlands as well as the UK, and last season coached Chelmsford ladies' 2nd team (East Prem).

A 'meet the coach' session is being arranged, for Jean to meet the players and club officials.

Following on from that, the detailed planning for the pre-season will get fully under way - for a season where we aim to get back into the national league.
